The Sony PFM-50C1 has a flat panel display with a screen size of 50 inches when measured diagonally and uses the plasma technology. The native resolution offered by the set is 1365 by 768, which is slightly more than 720p. All the input signals are scaled to fit the available pixel area. The set was priced at more than $12000 at the time of release. The dimensions of the set are 49.2 inches in width, 29.8 inches in height and 3.9 inches in depth. It tips the weigh scales at around 95 pounds. The depth and weight of the set are quite reasonable and make it easy to move the set around.

The black levels offered by the televisions using the plasma technology will never be as good as that offered by the CRT’s and hence care should be taken to operate the plasmas within its limits. False contouring is another area where the set fell short. Whenever the shadows change with big steps instead of fading smoothly from dark gray to black, it is called false contouring. The menu design is simple and effective and helps the user make the changes quite quickly. The overall performance of the is quite impressive even though the black levels could have been better even for a plasma.
